Molly’s Wardrobe: Plaid Dinner Gown

As those who have read the novel by Elizabeth Gaskell know, Molly’s plaid dinner gown is described as ‘terrible’. The gown in the movie however has lovely lines and details, and would be quite attractive if made up in a different fabric. [ITF: we like the plaid!] The fabric looks like taffeta and is a pink, teal and small yellow stripe plaid.

One of grown-up Molly’s first gowns is a striking sheer white gown worn while visiting Hamley Hall. While the all-white color scheme lends a simplistic charm to the gown, on closer examination it is highly decorated.

It was definitely fashionable to moon and brood…to make every scene sadly sentimental. Full skirts…tiny waists..shoulders drooped downward like champagne bottles. Girls were helpless…fraught with mystery! In truth, their dresses were so cut that it was impossible to raise the arm more than a few inches from the sides. The vocation of dressing assumed lavish proportions under the stimulus of the Emprese Eugenie.
